Unfortunately there is no way to change a character's name without remaking them once it has been created. This is a feature that has been mentioned to death in the Sardelac section of the forum but one none the less we will probably never see.

Anet can most certainly change character names, they just don't, unless the character has an offensive name and it has been reported.

I've got it! Have some friends report you for an offensive name, then ANET will force you to change it!

that works. or write support and make up a good story why your character's name needs to be changed (like a death in the family of the guy you named it after or whatever)

You have to have a really good reason for a name change. And as someone else stated, it's mostly on for offensive names and such :S.

Try and find some weird way to explain how your name can be considered perverted...then ask Anet to let you change it :P

Just so you know, changing your character's name disables you from being able to wear any of your armor and use any of your customized weapons/shields.

Is that right? I always thought that Armor & weapon customization are tied to the character, not the name. That's why you can't delete a character, create a new character with the same name, and them transfer the old character's armor (which you stuck in storage) to the new one.

As far as I know, this is not true.
They are still customised with your old name, but you can wear it... at least that's what I remember reading about here on this forum couple of years ago. |

right invent something. I love that idea. Like that was my x-husbands toon's name and I won it in a court settlement so you better do something about it. Or just bite the bullet and make a new toon.
Sadly the latter is your best hope - if the name that you want still exists. |

Armor is NOT tied to a name. A friend of mine had to change his name...and he was able to use everything from weapons to dungeon books to armor.

Armor and other character-customized items are tied to the character ID code (or whatever a programmer calls it). The name change is cosmetic only, it doesn't change that ID code, so items can still be used by the newly-named character.
Think of it as dying your armor a different color - instead of blue armor, you now have green armor, but it is still the same armor.
